PATNA: Vigilance Investigation Bureau sleuths raided the office and residence of engineer Madan Kumar of the construction department in Patna on Friday and unearthed assets worth more than Rs 2.54 crore that are disproportionate among its known sources of income.
Kumar has been posted as the executive engineer of the Patliputra division of the building construction department in Patna.
The raids were carried out at the engineer’s office near the Bihar Museum and his opulent three-storey home in Vrindavan Colony, Gola Road.
Vigilant sources said 21 plots in Patna Sadar, Danapur and Phulwari and two more in Madhubani have been registered in the name of the engineer, his wife Premlata Kumari and eldest son. They said the deeds of eight plots in Patna and two in Madhubani were recovered during Friday’s raid.
“These plots are worth several crores when judged by market rate. The house, in his wife’s name, is worth Rs 7-8 crore alone,” a source said.
Sources added Kumar’s eldest son is a second year engineering student at a South Indian university while his youngest son is studying in Class IX. They said that Kumar joined PWD as an assistant engineer on May 7, 1997 and his total income is Rs 1.2 crore till now.
“His total income from all sources is Rs 1.74 crore. But he has amassed real estate worth Rs 2.23 crore and movable property worth Rs 1.08 crore according to FIR registered on Oct. 6. Its DA at FIR stage was Rs 2.26 crore, which has risen to Rs 2.54 crore after raid,” said a source.
