
PATNA: After drones, the state Prohibition and Excise Department has deployed a helicopter to track down those indulging in illegal liquor production and smuggling in arid Bihar. The state-of-the-art helicopter will be deployed in the river and hilly areas of Bihar from Tuesday.
The excise officials said this helicopter will continuously monitor the entire Ganges river area from Buxar (west) to Katihar (east). “The five-seat helicopter, including the pilot, will have a team of excise officers, geospatial engineer and detection experts. The team will also do the video surveillance of the area. In addition, unmanned drones are also being deployed, so that the excise and police teams can immediately raid and destroy the liquor ovens after detection,” the officials said. This helicopter can operate continuously for six to seven hours a day. In the past two days, 1.5 lakh kilograms of Jawa and Mahua liquor were destroyed and 5,000 liters of rural liquor were recovered by the excise and police team using the helicopter while locating the illegal distilleries in the Diara areas of Patna, Vaishali and Saran. †
Deputy Commissioner (Excise) Krishna Kumar told this newspaper that several distilleries have been found in Chiraiya diara near Bakhtiyarpur, Lodipur diara in Maner, Revilganj diara in Saran and Sukumarpur in Vaishali. “The three districts of Patna, Vaishali and Saran were raided by separate teams led by Assistant Commissioner of Excise. However, no one was arrested. Using the cameras installed in the helicopters and drones, the raiding team is locating the peddlers,” he said.
A total of 554 raids were conducted by 17 drones in Patna, Vaishali, Saran, Bhojpur, West Champaran, East Champaran, Begusarai, Khagaria, Munger, Bhagalpur, Kishanganj and Supaul districts and 131 cases were recorded from February 1 to 12. the operation destroyed a total of 4,84,615 kg of jawa or mahua and 1,62,592 liters of liquor.
