NEET-UG 2022: Preparation strategy to score well in Zoology and Botany

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will soon release the dates and details of NEET UG 2022. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) is the only medical entrance exam for students. Candidates appearing for the final exams may also apply, if eligible. NEET is conducted in pen and paper and about 16 lakh candidates apply every year.

Registration for NEET opens online at neet.nta.nic.in† Enrollment is expected to start in the month of February or March 2022. Candidates who are thinking of applying for NEET this year should know that the competition in the exam is always very high.

As it is one of the most challenging exams in the country, candidates must follow the NEET 2022 syllabus and exam pattern. In order to score high on the exam, it is important to be well prepared with all subjects, especially Biology, as it carries a higher weight in the exam compared to the other subjects, namely Physics and Chemistry.

A good knowledge of the NEET 2022 exam pattern will help candidates to prepare, plan and execute strategies in a timely and sensible manner. Last year the exam went through a lot of changes in exam pattern. As indicated, the questions will be asked from 4 subjects: chemistry, physics, botany and zoology. Each topic is divided into two sections.

Section A consists of 35 MCQs, all questions are required to solve and Section B consists of 15 MCQs, in which candidates must solve 10 MCQs. The exam follows a negative points scheme. 4 points are awarded for each correct answer and 1 point is deducted for each incorrect answer. The maximum points of the question paper are 720.

The preparation of NEET 2022 must be strategic. Biology is one of the highest scoring subjects. The Biology course in NEET consists of two parts: Zoology and Botany. Every medical aspirant strives to do well in this section as it yields the maximum grades in NEET paper and with the right strategy and smart work, one can easily score 50 percent of the marks through the biology itself.

Here are some preparation tips to get good grades in the biology section of NEET 2022.

Study from NCERT books: Master the NCERT books as questions are asked directly from NCERT. As many subject matter experts and top performers point out, 70-80 percent of the questions in the exam come directly from the NCERT books. These can be easily attempted by those who have read the NCERT syllabus religiously and thoroughly. Besides NCERT, there are also several other good books for NEET 2022.

Also, focus on high-weight topics: At least 8-10 questions will be at an advanced level. These questions are game-changers and decisive questions. Concentrate on understanding the concepts of weighty topics.

Solve last year’s questions and mock tests: Students must take as many mock tests as possible. Practicing test papers will help candidates improve their performance and pass the exam. Practice the MCQs of each chapter and analyze the wrong questions. Make sure to practice questions regularly.

Take notes and flashcards: Create charts and personal notes for quick review. Since biology is a theoretical subject and much needs to be memorized, it becomes useful to make short notes on each subject. Learning can also be made easy by emphasizing importance and creating mnemonics for examples and biological terms. This will help in efficient and multiple revisions. Also don’t forget to review the diagrams and designations.

Revision is key: Regular revision is a must in biology to be able to remember everything learned. The revision also ensures that candidates can easily remember all the facts during the exam.

The Botany section in Biology can be a bit confusing and difficult as the syllabus is quite extensive and needs to be memorized. To master the section on botany, you can watch video lectures to better understand the chapters and review them side by side regularly. On the other hand, the Zoology section in Biology is comprehensive and involves a combination of concepts and memorization. To strengthen the Zoology section, watch concept videos and create mind maps for a clear understanding. Also create flowcharts of each draft for last minute revision.

NEET is one of the largest medical competitive entrance exams in India for which thousands of students appear every year. Last year, 16.14 lakh students registered for the exam and more than 95 percent of the students appeared for the exam. Until NEET 2022, the candidates can access courses such as MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BUMS/BSMS/BHMS and other RUG medical courses.
