NEET, JEE Main 2022: age, application number to play in tie-breaking

NEET, JEE Main 2022: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has reduced the age factor as one of the criteria for severing ties in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2022 and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2022. The NTA followed this until 2020, but in a major shift, it dropped the age criterion of the breakthrough policy last year.

The NTA has added one more feature to the NEET 2022 and JEE Main 2022 Breakthrough Policies: Application Numbers in Ascending Order. This means that if two candidates achieve the same marks or percentile in the entrance exams and their ties cannot be resolved in any other way, the one who applied for the exam earlier will be given priority in the merit list.

Tie Breaking Method in JEE Main 2022

Ties between candidates achieving equal scores in paper 1 (BE/B.Tech) will be resolved in descending order as follows:

1. NTA score in math, followed by

2. NTA Score in Physics

3. NTA Score in Chemistry

4. Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in all subjects

5. Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in Mathematics

6. Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in Physics

7. Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in chemistry

8. The candidate’s parent in Age followed by

9. Application number in ascending order

A similar method will be used for JEE Main paper 2. Candidates can refer to the information bulletin for more information.

Method for breaking the tie in NEET 2022

The candidate who obtains higher grades/percentile score in Biology (Botany and Zoology) will be preferred in the merit list followed by

Candidate achieves higher grades/percentile Chemistry

Candidate achieves higher grades/percentile in physics

Candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect and correct answers attempts in all subjects in

Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in Biology

Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in chemistry

Candidate with a smaller proportion of a number of incorrect answers and correct answers attempts in Physics

Applicant older in age, followed by

Application number in ascending order

In NEET 2020, two candidates – Soyeb Aftab from Odisha and Akanksha Singh from Uttar Pradesh – had scored 720 out of 720, but the former was awarded rank 1 for all of India due to his advanced age.

By the following year, the NTA had dropped the age factor for determining ranks and multiple candidates had secured the highest ranks based on that.

However, the NTA later said the age criterion will play a role in the counseling process.

This year, the agency will use the age limit and application number as two criteria for determining ranks.
