Mangaluru: Engineering student found dead in Surathkal

MANGALURU: A 19-year-old B Tech student was found dead in his hostel room in Mangaluru, police said on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Sourav Kumar Yadav, an electrical and electronics student at the National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka (NITK) and a resident of Bihar.
According to City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar, the financial crisis may have forced young people to take this extreme step.
The Commissioner also had contact with university authorities and students.
Police also found an obituary addressed to the victim’s father.
Kumar added that in the death certificate, the victim had asked his father to pay off his student loan worth Rs 1 lakh. He had Rs 46,000 in his account and requested his father to pay off the loan as early as possible otherwise the interest would be counted. He went on to write that he was going and going crazy and that it was easy to get rid of life.
The 19-year-old further stated that no one else was responsible for his death. He trained after taking out a student loan and feared that by the time he completed his education, the loan burden would only have increased. He wasn’t sure if he would get a job after graduating and was probably dealing with mental stress, Kumar said.
When his friends tried to call him for breakfast around 8am, he wouldn’t open the door. At around 9:30 a.m., when they tried to reach him again and peeked through the window, they found him hanging in the room.
The university authorities were then notified, who in turn contacted his parents.
Coming from a poor family, his parents reportedly stated that they were unable to travel to Mangaluru and requested that the authorities carry out the cremation.
However, university authorities, teachers and students have arranged the travel of the victim’s parents and are investigating arrangements to return the remains home after the legal process is completed, the commissioner added.
Surathkal Police have registered a case of unnatural death and further investigations are underway.
