ISRO launches ‘Young Scientist Programme’ for Class 11 students; registrations begin

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) organizes a special program for school children called “YUva VIgyani Karyakram” (YUVIKA) or “Young Scientist Program” to teach young students basic knowledge about space technology, space science and space applications, especially for those from rural areas.

The program aims to select 150 students across the country, who will study in class 11 in a school in the territory of India on March 1, 2022

Enrollment for the program began on March 10, and the last application date is April 10 until 4 PM. The announcement of the preliminary selection list for YUVIKA – 2022 will be published on April 20. Interested and eligible candidates can apply at isro.gov.in.

The selection of participants will be based on a number of parameters, including grades obtained in the 8th exam, and participation in science fairs (school/district/state and higher level) organized by the school/district/state/central government in the last three year.

The program aims to raise awareness about emerging trends in science and technology among the youth, who are the “future building blocks of our nation,” according to the Bengaluru-based space agency.

The program is also expected to encourage more students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-based careers and research work, it said.

The YUVIKA-2022 residential program will run for two weeks from May 16 to May 28. The program includes lectures, experience sharing by leading scientists, experimental demonstrations, visits to facilities and laboratories, exclusive sessions for expert discussions, hands-on and feedback sessions.

The program is expected to be held at five ISRO centers: Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram; UR Rao Satellite Center (URSC), Bengaluru; Space Application Center (SAC), Ahmedabad; National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC), Hyderabad and North-East Space Application Center (NE-SAC), Shillong.
