In the CAT 2021 results released on January 3, Maharashtra’s Yash Mandhana, much to his surprise, achieved 99.99 percentile. The IIT-Bombay student claims that he only started his preparation in July 2021, studying for two hours a day to prepare for the management entrance exam.
“When I downloaded my scorecard, I expected to score about 99.95 percentile. However, scoring close to a perfect score certainly came as a surprise. I am delighted with the success and will now prepare for the next round. I aspire to join one of the three IIMs of Ahmedabad, Bangalore or Calcutta,” the topper announced.
A native of Mumbai, Yash studied at Poddar International School and then gave JEE permission to study at IIT-Bombay. He is currently in the final year of the B-Tech-M-Tech dual education.
Speaking about his preparation for the CAT exam, Yash said his reading habits formed a foundation for his preparation for the reading comprehension section. Meanwhile, solving mock tests helped him assess his accuracy and efficiency in the exam environment.
“I started competing in several Olympiads at a very young age and also preparing for NTSE in grade 10. These tests helped me become familiar with the concepts of reasoning and fast math. Meanwhile, about 70 percent overlap CAT syllabus with JEE syllabus. This also proved helpful in preparation,” Yash said.
Yash emphasized the importance of conducting time-based pilot testing and devoting at least an hour a day to identifying the weaknesses based on the performance of the pilot test.
“While I was preparing next to my graduation, I spent my time efficiently studying for both exams. I showed up for at least two mock tests each week and spent the rest of the time practicing TIME’s questions. Their explained solutions helped me better understand the questions tried wrong,” he shared.
Yash has also been placed with a global brand and is looking forward to joining the company. For his CAT 2021 attempt, the topper wants to take advantage of the deferral option only offered to his students by IIM Ahmedabad to gain admission, but continue classes after a two-year hiatus. In the event that he does not get into IIM-A, he will think about the most suitable options.
