Bihar: Engineer detained while Rs 18 lakh was taken from his vehicle

PATNA: Muzaffarpur Police on Saturday detained a chief engineer of the Rural Works Department, Anil Kumar, and his driver for questioning after recovering Rs 18 lakh in cash from an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) from the former.
Muzaffarpur SSP Jayant Kant said officials of the Income Tax Department and the Vigilance Investigation Bureau have been informed of the recovery of huge money from the superintendent engineer’s SUV.
The SSP said officials of the rural works department in Patna were also informed about the seizure and filed an FIR against Kumar at the Phakuli police post in Muzaffarpur district for violating the model code of conduct for the subsequent panchayat polls.
Additional SP (west) Syed Imran Masood said the white SUV was stopped at the Phakuli Chowk on Muzaffarpur-Hajipur road during a vehicle check drive.
During a search, the officers on duty found a bag in the trunk of the vehicle. They were surprised to see bundles of notes in the bag. The notes were in the denomination of Rs 500. They informed the senior officials about the matter.
The additional SP said the chief engineer, who was traveling in the car, was unable to provide a satisfactory answer as to the source of the money he was carrying. “He failed to provide the evidence, which led to his detention,” he said.
A team of police officers questioned Kumar’s driver Saroj Kumar Singh to get more information. Singh is a resident of Rampur Moriyama village in Sitamarhi district.
Kumar was on his way to Patna from Darbhanga with the money. Kumar was placed in the Darbhanga division. The SSP said Kumar, a resident of Khagaria district, also owns a house in Patna.
