Bihar: 6 MNC engineers, doctor arrested with drink from 2 hotels in Patna

PATNA: An hour before attending a close friend’s wedding, police arrested six software engineers working with an internationally renowned company with a bottle of liquor in a room of Fortune hotel in RN Singh Road below Kankarbagh Police Station in Patna around 8:30pm on Saturday.
An MBBS doctor Shailendra Shekhar was also arrested from the Ginger hotel on the Dakbungalow roundabout in the state capital, who had arrived here for an interview at AIIMS-Patna in a separate Saturday night raid.
These indiscriminate hotel raids are part of an intensified operation to enforce the ban with an iron fist at the direction of CM Nitish Kumar after recent high deaths.
Kankarbagh Police Station SHO Ravishankar Kumar said arrested engineers are Rohit Kumar who is working with Amazon in Hyderabad, Kanchan Kumar of Cognizant and Anil Kumar who is working with Zenix in New Delhi, Vinit Jaiswal London Allstate and Anand Kumar of Tata in Kolkata and Vikash Kumar who is working together with Lancesoft in Bombay.
SHO Kumar said they were preparing all six of their drinks for consumption, but until then, police arrived on the scene. “None of them were intoxicated. Their breathalyzer was also negative,” he said.
Kumar said a full bottle of high-end branded Indian Manufactured Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and six disposable glasses were seized.
SHO Kumar said all six of them reached Patna via flight and train to attend a close friend’s wedding in Patna, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday night.
“They were said to have been part of the baraat within hours, before being arrested at random checks at hotels occupied by the police,” he said. SHO said all six were taken to the police station after being arrested.
He said that for the past three days, every police station in the district has been conducting random checks on at least two hotels a day to strictly enforce the ban.
Kotwali Police Station SHO Sunil Kumar Singh said Shekhar is from Bhagalpur and studied medical in Maharashtra.
“He had arrived in Patna on Friday,” he said. Singh said Shekhar was not found intoxicated, but an IMFL bottle containing 10ml of liquor was recovered in his possession.
